Standard Concrete Mix Ratios (IS 456 Nominal Mixes)
When casting residential foundations, columns, beams, or roof slabs in Chennai, contractors and structural engineers specify concrete by grade. The letter M stands for "Mix", and the number represents the characteristic compressive strength in Megapascals (N/mm²) after 28 days of wet curing.
| Grade | Nominal Ratio (C : S : A) | Characteristic Strength | Recommended Application in Chennai |
|---|---|---|---|
| M10 | 1 : 3 : 6 | 10 N/mm² | PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) levelling course, compound wall bed. |
| M15 | 1 : 2 : 4 | 15 N/mm² | Ground floor flooring PCC, pathway slabs, boundary column foundations. |
| M20 | 1 : 1.5 : 3 | 20 N/mm² | Most common residential RCC: Roof slabs, lintels, standard beams and footings. |
| M25 | 1 : 1 : 2 | 25 N/mm² | Heavy-load columns, cantilever beams, water tank slabs, coastal villa frames (ECR/OMR). |
Material Calculation for 100 sq ft Roof Slab (5-inch thickness)
A standard residential roof slab in Tamil Nadu is poured at a thickness of 5 inches (0.416 feet). For every 100 square feet of slab area:
- Wet Concrete Volume: 100 sq ft × (5 ÷ 12) ft = 41.67 Cubic Feet (CFT) ≈ 1.18 m³.
- Dry Volume Factor: Dry ingredients shrink by approximately 54% when mixed with water. Dry volume required = 41.67 × 1.54 = 64.17 CFT.
For M20 Grade (Ratio 1 : 1.5 : 3 = Total 5.5 parts):
- Cement: (1 ÷ 5.5) × 64.17 = 11.67 CFT ≈ 9.5 to 10 bags (50 kg each).
- M-Sand (Double Washed): (1.5 ÷ 5.5) × 64.17 = 17.5 CFT ≈ 0.85 to 0.90 Ton (~18 CFT).
- 20mm Blue Metal: (3 ÷ 5.5) × 64.17 = 35.0 CFT ≈ 1.65 to 1.75 Ton (~35 CFT).
Rule of Thumb for a 1,000 sq ft House Roof Slab:
Multiply the numbers above by 10: ~95 to 100 bags cement, 8.5 to 9 tons of M-Sand (approx 1 tipper load), and 17 tons of 20mm blue metal (approx 2 tipper loads).
Why 20mm Blue Metal & Double-Washed M-Sand Are Essential
Using unwashed sand or round river gravel will fail structural compression tests:
- Angular Granite Interlock: Machine-crushed 20mm blue metal has rough, fractured surfaces. When cement paste hydrates, it forms a mechanical interlock that rounded pebbles cannot replicate.
- Grading to IS 383 Zone II: Sieve analysis must ensure a balanced distribution of 4.75mm down to 150-micron particles so voids between coarse rocks are filled completely without excess cement.
- Zero Salt / Chloride: Coastal sand from ECR or uncertified quarries contains chlorides that initiate reinforcement rust within 3 to 5 years. OneInfra M-Sand is sourced exclusively from inland hard granite quarries.
Hot-Weather Concreting Tips in Chennai
- Morning Pour: Schedule tipper arrivals so concrete mixing starts by 7:00 AM before ambient heat crosses 32°C.
- Moist Stockpiles: Lightly sprinkle your 20mm aggregate stockpile with water before loading into the mixer to prevent it from absorbing mix water.
- Pond Curing: Make cement-mortar bunds (kiari) on the slab within 12 hours and keep flooded with clean water for at least 14 days (21 days for OPC 43/53 grade).
